Biography
Jon
Cave is an author/photographer/lecturer and a USCG licensed
guide. He has been a professional fly casting and fly tying
instructor for over 25 years and operates one of the longest
established fly-fishing schools in the United States. Jon
has taught thousands of students and instructs in his home
State of Florida as well as on expedition schools to The Bahamas,
Costa Rica, Belize, Mexico, Blue Ridge Mountains, and other
angling hot-spots. In addition, he has conducted training
seminars for fly-fishing guides at various international locations.
His credentials also include prior service on the Board of
Governors for the FFF Casting Instructor Certification Program.
Jon has an M.S. Degree in Natural Resources from Ball State
University with special concentration in fisheries and water
resources. His studies included a year-long in-depth analysis
on the dynamics of a lake and the subject of his masters thesis
was mortality rates of fish based on the use of flies, live-bait,
and lures. The thesis results were published in Progressive
Fish Culturist and presented before The National Academy of
Science. As a part of an ongoing interest in fisheries, Jon
currently holds a seat on the Advisory Council for the Atlantic
States Marine Fisheries Commission and presided for several
years as the Chairman of the FFF Saltwater Committee.
Jon is a product consultant for several manufacturers of fly-fishing
related products. In addition to being a member of the advisory
staffs for Sage Rods, Rio Fly Lines, and Tibor Reels, Jon
currently serves as an Umpqua Contract Tyer with his innovative
Wobbler and Rattler patterns. He works extensively as an advisor
for Gordon Boatworks custom skiff builders and is a Heritage
Kayak Endorsed Guide as well.
Jon is the author of the book Fly-Fishing Odyssey, The Pursuit
of Great Gamefish, an insightful look at the techniques needed
to catch a variety of marine and fresh water gamefish with
fly gear. Additionally, his articles, casting tips, and photographs
have been featured in most major fly-fishing publications.
In 1998, the FFF honored him with the prestigious Silver King
Award for his contributions to saltwater flyfishing..
